Call of Duty is the most successful gaming franchise ever. With Call of Duty: Black Ops the most recent release, breaking multiple records for most sales.

 I don't have a reason why this is the most popular shooter ever but it may partially due to the smooth game mechanics. And the large online capabilities this is my opinion though.
